wpid Margin Call movie image Kevin Spacey slice Trailer for MARGIN CALL Starring Kevin Spacey, Zachary Quinto, Demi Moore, and Paul Bettany

The first trailer for the financial thriller Margin Call has been released. The film debuted at Sundance, and judging from the trailer it looks to be a fairly intense morality piece. The cast is great, and Steve caught the film at the festival and said it was really good. I like the tone here, and the idea of the film’s events playing out over a single day and night is definitely intriguing.

The story centers on the key people at an investment bank during the 24-hour period before the recent financial crisis. The cast includes Demi Moore, Simon Baker, Penn Badgley, Zachary Quinto, Paul Bettany, Jeremy Irons, Stanley Tucci and Kevin Spacey. You can check out Steve’s interview with all of the above here and here. Margin Call opens October 21st. Hit the jump to watch the trailer.

The UK trailer for the horror flick Intruders has gone online.  The story focuses on two families, on in Britain and the other in Spain and a child from each family being haunted by a dark specter.  Clive Owen plays the father of the British girl who sees the shadowy figure and his skepticism turns to the horror when he discovers that the malevolent creature is real.  I really hope that Intruders isn’t going to be “Trust but with a menacing apparition instead of a rapist.”  They certainly seem to share theme of a father struggling with his inability to protect his child.

Hit the jump to check out the trailer.  The film also stars Carice van Houten, Daniel Bruhl, Pilar Lopez de Ayala, and Kerry Fox.  Intruders opens in the UK and the US on October 7th.

wpid doctor who comic con slice 01 Comic Con 2011: DOCTOR WHO Panel Recap plus Trailer for Second Half of Season 6

Doctor Who is back in America, only this time he doesn’t have to fight the Silence. Instead, he’s kicking back in Hall H amongst fez and bowtie donned fans, giant Daleks and quiet a few human-TARDISes. Doctor Who filled up Comic Con’s Hall H today for panel celebrating the show’s exciting 6th season, and second year of Doctor Eleven, played by Matt Smith. With the show being on hiatus fans are anxiously grabbing at any information they can find while awaiting the show’s return in August. The panel consisted of The Doctor himself, Matt Smith (who was enjoying his first convention in America), his sassy and gorgeous companion Karen Gillan (Amy Pond), producers Piers Wenger and Beth Willis, and writer Toby Whithouse. Hit the jump to find out whether we should be fearing the return of Daleks this fall.

wpid doctor who trust your doctor poster 01 Comic Con 2011: DOCTOR WHO Panel Recap plus Trailer for Second Half of Season 6The panel started off with a quick montage catching up the audience to what happened in the first part of the season, with the death of the Doctor, the introduction of The Flesh, the new enemy seeking war with The Doctor, as well as the revelation of River Song as Amy and Rory’s daughter. The moderator then started a Q&A with his own questions and then opening it up to questions from the audience.  Here is the recap of the panel:

-Neither Smith or Gillan knew that River was Amy’s daughter before hand, though Alex Kingston had been told since the beginning of the previous season.

-For the cast reading scripts is like watching the show; they are always are shocked by what is coming and want to know what is going to happen next.

-Smith and Gillan were not really fans before getting the job because they did not grow up watching the show, the writers however did grow up watching the show and joke about how they had no idea when they were kids that they were researching for there future jobs. Everyone in UK knows what Doctor Who is though, so Smith and Gillan knew what it was. Since the reboot, it has made a comeback as a phenomenon in the UK and everyone involved is really excited that it’s gaining such popularity in the US. They feel wonderful to be part of a legacy that has been around so long and that so many people are passionate about, they feel like the luckiest people

-Neil Gaiman wrote in the Doctor’s Wife draft “INT. INSIDE THE TARDIS (I feel like I’ve been waiting my whole life to write that line.)” That aside made it all the way to the read through draft because they enjoyed it so much

-They showed a scene from a future episode written by Toby Whithouse called “The God Complex.” It involved a “Shining”-like hotel and Minotaur. Needless to say I cannot wait to see what is happening. The episode is going to be the 11th episode of season 6, airing fourth when the show comes back from hiatus.

-The moderator asked “What does it take to write a good monster for the Doctor?  The producers answered that they need to find the humanity and sympathy of the monster, make it a relatable character (such as in the case of the Vampires of Venice.) They find the connection and complexity of the character for the Doctor to be intrigued by because the Doctor never actually wants to fight the monsters, he wants to find the intention of the monster and investigate what is happening. Each episode is more like a mystery story.

-“Will the astronaut that kills the doctor be addressed?” It will be eventually in due time. Whithouse stated that he wants to find out with the audience, but that the problem with working on Doctor Who is often knowing what is coming and what is going to happen, but saying that the only one who really knows what is going on and Steven Moffat likes to keep things close to the vest. Saying that he tries to keep and ignorant as possible.

-They stopped the panel to show a preview clip montage of what is coming up on Doctor Who for the second half of season 6. Here is the trailer from BBC America :

-“Will there be more Daleks?” As River would say, “Spoilers!”

wpid Doctor Who image Matt Smith series five 4 Comic Con 2011: DOCTOR WHO Panel Recap plus Trailer for Second Half of Season 6-A fan mentioned a new album of Doctor Who songs called “Chameleon Circuit” Smith commended the album and talked about how lucky he feels to be a part of such a far reaching fandom and community of talented people.

-“Does anything actually scare the actors on set?” Gillan told a funny story about how Smith likes to hide in her trailer with a giant shoe horn and jump out and scare her (apparently when he did that she cried because she was so scared.)

-“Is there going to be another special along the same line as “The 3 Doctors” and “The 5 Doctors”?” Sure, they would love to do something like that.

-“Is the Doctor’s daughter coming back?” Who knows!

-“Will the Dream Lord be returning?” They want to bring him back. Smith especially wants to bring him back because he liked the idea of the Doctor’s evil alter ego and finds it interesting. That the Doctor has so much blood and guilt on his hands and that that to plays with the darker side of him is an interesting concept.

-Smith has a manual on how to drive the TARDIS and that he has taught Gillan how to drive it as well. He knows what all the buttons do and that if you watch the show closely you can notice that all the controls he uses to take off, land, and put in coordinates are always the same mechanisms and in the same order.

-Gillan’s favorite aliens are The Sisters of Plenitudeand Smith’s are the Weeping Angels.

-They went down the panel and asked who their favorite Doctor was:

Piers Wenger: Tom Baker

Beth Willis: Tom Baker

Toby Whithouse: Tom Baker or David Tennant

Matt Smith: Patrick Troughton or Tom Baker

Karen Gillan: Christopher Eccleston

wpid Doctor Who image Matt Smith series five 2 Comic Con 2011: DOCTOR WHO Panel Recap plus Trailer for Second Half of Season 6- One person asked if they thought they were contributing to Modern Mythology. The producers do not feel they are or should claim such a thing, but they do take Doctor Who very seriously and they are grateful for the continued support of the fans who also take it very seriously. They love the show passionately and that the audience does as well is amazing.

-‘Will there ever be a girl doctor?” The Doctor is built and led by the actor or actress chosen, so it is always a possibility. However River is very much like what a female Doctor might be that they fear that she may have stolen the thunder of a female Doctor.

-“How much of Matt Smith is in the Doctor and vice versa?” Smith is very much like the doctor, less competent perhaps. Steven Moffat likes to say, “He just IS the Doctor.” Moffat writes for and with Smith in mind, the producers marvel at how the two come together organically. Smith insists that Amy is cooler then Karen Gillan. Gillan agreed that it was true. Smith talked about becoming the Doctor, saying that as an actor you spend time with the character, becoming them and The Doctor just such an interesting character to become.

-Smith is the first Doctor to get nominated for a BAFTA.

-The writers think that Smith is brilliant and that they are so lucky to have him. He believes getting the role was a game changer for him. The auditions were super secret and he barely had time to practice the lines since he got them a day in advance, but everyone including his mother said that he should be the next doctor. The writers said casting him was the easiest decision they ever made. After they saw him the second time Moffat said, “It’s him, lets face it, it’s always been him.”

-Getting Gillan was a similarly easy decision; after they saw her Moffat jumped up and yelled “We found her!”

wpid doctor who matt smith karen gillan 01 600x450 Comic Con 2011: DOCTOR WHO Panel Recap plus Trailer for Second Half of Season 6-“How much science do the writers research for there episodes?” Toby Whithouse confessed that he doesn’t really do that much research into the science aspect , instead researching on the period or tone for the episode he is writing. Steven Moffat came up with the “Spacey-Wacey Timey-Whimey” line, and Whithouse was grateful because most of the “science” aspect of the episodes is made up.

-The Fez came about because Smith had been whining at Moffat to give the Doctor a hat for a while and so Moffat gave him the stupidest hat imaginable. He was disgruntled that River exploded it though. He does say however is all about the Stetson now.

-The tweed jacket and bowtie were Smith’s idea and the writers were very apposed to it until Smith put it on and it just fit, so really Smith created the look of Eleven.

-The sound of the TARDIS flying is so iconic to the fans and to the series that even though it is explained by River that it’s just the Doctor flying with the parking break on they keep the sound.

-“Why do they keep killing Rory?” He’s become the Kenny of the series, but he always comes back and seems to learn things after each death.

-Steven Moffat has told the actors information about the future of their characters and they are keeping this information secret from each other while they are filming (such as the Doctor suspecting that Amy was Flesh.) The actors hope that some of that keeping of these secrets translates to the screen.

-“How many props has Smith broken?” Loads! The Propmaster is amazing on the show, but he’s constantly having to replace sonic screwdrivers and bits of the TARDIS because Smith is clumsy and drops or breaks things a lot. He has a box of about six rotating sonic screwdrivers and Smith breaks about one a day.

-“What show would they love to crossover with?”

Smith: True Blood

Gillan: Star Trek: The Next Generation. She’s admitted to being a huge fan and at this convention she got to meet both Wil Wheton and Brent Spiner, and freaking out about it.

-“What does the Red Setting do on River’s Sonic?” Smith is annoyed that River has a screwdriver and doesn’t consider it to be a real sonic, also he suspects that the red setting turns you into an orangutan.

-“Will we see more glimpses of the Doctor’s darkside?” Smith hopes so. He thinks that is the reason why the Doctor is so bubbly and in a constant state of motion, because the moment that he stops he’ll be forced to face the darker aspects of his past and what he’s done. Also, remember “Rule #1, the Doctor Lies.”

-“What writers would they love to have on the show?” There are a lot but the ones they could think of were JJ Abrams, Raul Daul, Edgar Wright, and they would also love to have Russell T. Davis come back for an episode.

Doctor Who returns to Kill Hitler on August 27th.

wpid the last airbender legend of korra image slice Trailer for THE LAST AIRBENDER: LEGEND OF KORRA; New Details on the Upcoming Miniseries

If we can all forget M. Night Shyamlan’s atrocious The Last Airbender (I went through a lot of counseling in order to do so), we can perhaps go back a little further and appreciate the original Nickelodeon show Avatar: The Last Airbender.  Last year it was announced that the saga would continue with the miniseries Legend of Korra.  There was a miniseries for the panel this year at Comic-Con but unfortunately we were unable to attend.  The good news is that the teaser trailer they showed has now gone online!

The central premise of Legend of Korra is that it picks up 70 years after the original series and Korra of the Water Tribe is the new Avatar.  Because the Avatar must learn all four elements, that’s a bit of a problem seeing as Aang was the last airbender so who can teacher Korra airbending?  As you’ll see in the trailer, she’s at least got waterbending and firebending down pretty well.  No official release date has been announced for Legend of Korra, but we’ll let you know as soon as it’s announced.  Hit the jump to check out the trailer and to learn more about the upcoming miniseries.

wpid legend of korra polar bear dog naga image 01 449x600 Trailer for THE LAST AIRBENDER: LEGEND OF KORRA; New Details on the Upcoming MiniseriesUGO reports that Korra’s friends are Mako, “a handsome Asian man with some crazy sci-fi hair” and he has a brooding, “Zuko-ish” attitude.  His brother Bolen is a little goofier.  They come from the United Republic, “a city founded by Aang and Zuko meant to be a multicultural metropolis where people from all the Tribes live together.  (A 1920s jazz age Shanghai with industrial revolution-era colors.)”

Whereas Aang and his crew rode around on a sky bison, Korra’s animal-vehicle of choice is a polar-bear dog named Naga (right, image via this Airbender fansite).  She also has “a wormy-looking Red Panda/Black-Footed Ferrett called a Fire Ferret.”

As I mentioned, Korra’s challenge to becoming an Avatar is how to learn airbending.  The secret lies with Kenzen, Aang and Katara’s son.  According to UGO, “Kenzen, an Airbender, is key to Korra’s development, as Air is the last element for Korra to master.”  Furthermore, “Kenzen is married to Pemma, a blonde woman, and they have three kids:  Genora is a bookworm-y daughter, Ikki is a motor mouth daughter and Milo is a goofy boy who kinda looks like Aang.  (I may have the spelling wrong on these, but just go with it.)”

The antagonists this time around are”The Revolution”, masked men who are anti-Benders called “Chi-Blockers”.  They don’t much care for bending in any of its forms and their mission is to defeat Korra.  Furthermore, Toph’s legacy of metalbending has yielded two complications for Korra.  First are the “Metalbender Cops” who look like samurais but with metal cables coiled up on their backs.  More surprising is that the Metalbenders are led by Toph’s daughter, a sexy-looking bad-ass who’s functions as the de facto sheriff of Republic City.

This all sounds terrific and I can’t wait to see more.

wpid main street slice First Trailer for MAIN STREET Starring Colin Firth, Patricia Clarkson, Amber Tamblyn, and Orlando Bloom

Magnolia has released the first trailer for Main Street, a drama about “the residents of a small Southern city are changed forever by the arrival of a stranger with a controversial plan to save their decaying hometown.”  It’s worth a watch for Colin Firth and Orlando Bloom trying on Southern accents.  There’s something about the transition from proper English to Southern drawl that sounds unnatural, especially when Bloom is acting opposite Margo Martindale, who owns the homespun phrasing.

I honestly couldn’t get past it, but you can give it a shot after the break.  Ellen Burstyn, Patricia Clarkson, Amber Tamblyn also star.  Main Street premieres on VOD August 5, followed by theatrical release September 9.

Watch in HD over at Apple.

Official synopsis:

From Horton Foote, Oscar winning screenwriter of To Kill a Mockingbird and Tender Mercies, comes MAIN STREET, a moving ensemble drama starring Oscar winner Colin Firth, Orlando Bloom, Oscar nominee Patricia Clarkson, Oscar winner Ellen Burstyn, and Andrew McCarthy. The lives of the residents of a small Southern city are changed forever by the arrival of a stranger with a controversial plan to save their decaying hometown.

wpid Bunraku movie image 8 First Trailer for THE BUNRAKU Starring Josh Hartnett, Woody Harrelson, and Ron Perlman

After watching the trailer for The Bunraku, I’m more than a little confused. Its visual style conjures imagery of Dick Tracy and Kung Fu Hustle, but it’s as if these films took place in the world of Beetle Juice. Not to mention there’s some guy unloading serious kick-assery while wearing what seems to be the sorting hat from Harry Potter. The story is as follows: a drifter (Josh Hartnett) teams up with a young samurai (Gackt) and a bartender (Woody Harrelson) who plot revenge against a ruthless leader (Ron Perlman), a dangerous man leading an army of criminals headed by nine diverse and deadly assassins. The film also stars Demi Moore and Kevin McKidd.

All in all, the trailer makes the movie look a bit ridiculous but unique enough to leave an impression. Hit the jump to check it out along with an extended synopsis of the film.

Trailer via AICN:

Steve got the opportunity to watch a screening of The Bunraku at the Toronto Internationl Film Festival last year. You can watch his video reaction here.

Full Synopsis:

In a hyperreal, hyper-saturated, hyper-driven dystopia, guns are banned upon pain of death and the sword is now king.

Nicola the Woodcutter (Ron Perlman) is the most powerful man east of the Atlantic, a shadowy crime boss who rules with an iron fist with the help of nine diverse assassins and the Red Gang, a force not to be trifled with. His right-hand man is Killer #2 (Kevin McKidd), a cold-hearted, smooth-talking, toe-tapping murderer dressed in red and wielding a deadly blade without remorse. The citizens live in fear of this pack of wolves, and wait for the hero who can overthrow the tyrant.

One night, a man (Josh Hartnett) walks into the bar of the local insurgent (Woody Harrelson) and desires two things: a shot of whisky and to kill Nicola. Soon, another stranger enters the bar, a samurai named Yoshi (played by Japanese pop star GACKT). Yoshi wants to avenge his father by taking back a talisman that Nicola stole from his clan. Armed with crossed destinies and incredible fighting skills, the two set out on a journey, breaking bones and cracking heads in search for Nicola.

In an amalgam of samurai film, spaghetti western and chop socky – and using a stylish blend of neo-noir, German expressionism and Russian futurism – director Guy Moshe’s debut feature Bunraku is nothing short of ambitious. Characters in the world of Bunraku spin and ricochet against a backdrop that resembles a pop-up-book made of origami, ever-changing and whirring like a steam driven Victorian theatre set. It is a universe driven by pugilistic force, delivered in a brash style of amazing physical combat sequences by stunt coordinator Clayton Barber and fight choreographer Larnell Stovall that evoke Gene Kelly by way of Bloodsport. Hartnett will surprise many with his presence as the man with no name, played with a steely perfection and ripped straight out of a Western, while GACKT channels Toshiro Mifune’s stone cold devotion to a mission.

Completely unique while drawing upon a myriad of classical influences, Bunraku emerges as a visually stunning and adrenaline pumping blend of flavours old and new, east and west.

The trailer for writers/directors Alex Gregory and Peter Huyck’s comedy A Good Old Fashioned Orgy is now available online. Starring Jason Sudeikis, Will Forte, Lucy Punch, Leslie Bibb, Lindsay Sloane, Tyler Labine, and Lake Bell, the film tells the story of a 30 year-old man/child (Sudeikis) who decides to throw one last bash at the Hampton residence his parents are on the verge of selling. Judging from the trailer, the pic almost looks like an uninterrupted barrage of partying and general immaturity. In short, I’m looking forward to it. That said, I can’t help but wonder how I can get my hands on one of those “Labor Day Orgy” t-shirts.

wpid paranormal activity 3 photoshop slice 01 First Trailer for PARANORMAL ACTIVITY 3

The first trailer for the found footage horror pic Paranormal Activity 3 has gone online. Directed this time around by Catfish helmers Henry Joost and Ariel Schulman, the film is set in the 1980s and promises to help audiences “discover the secret to the activity.” I too would like to learn how to turn $15,000 into more than $100 million so hopefully this entry will help achieve that end. Otherwise, the film looks to be an origin story that focuses on protagonist Katie’s younger years and the weird happenings that were referenced in the original. If this turns out to be the case, I can’t say I’m overly enthused about seeing it.

wpid holy terror slice Teaser Trailer for Frank Miller’s HOLY TERROR

A teaser trailer for Frank Miller’s upcoming graphic novel Holy Terror is now available online. That’s right, it’s a trailer. For a comic. And you know what? I kind of like it. Featuring the classic hard lines of Miller’s art and the type of violence that fans of previous works like Sin City and/or 300 have come to expect and enjoy from the writer/artist, Holy Terror looks to be a gruesomely fun ride with a little social commentary sprinkled on top. Originally conceived a decade ago as Holy Terror, Batman, the 120-page graphic novel now centers on a “hero” called The Fixer who fights terror on the fear-filled, post 9/11 streets.

Check out the trailer after the jump. The newly formed Legendary Comics will release Holy Terror as its inaugural title on September 14th.
