wpid double movie image topher grace richard gere slice 01 Trailer for THE DOUBLE Saves You the Trouble of Seeing the Movie

The Double looks like it could have been a solid spy flick.  You had Richard Gere and Topher Grace playing government agents trying to track down an assassin code-named Cassius.  Nothing genre-shattering but it could be well executed. Well you know those irritating trailers that give away the entire damn plot?  This trailer for The Double blows them all away.  It gives you a major plot twist that would have been somewhat interesting if not wholly believable within the context of the movie.  It takes you deep into the third act of the film.  It shows you pretty much everything it can in a desperate big to make you want to see this movie and now any desire I had to see the flick has been extinguished by this trailer.  Great job, whoever cut this.

Hit the jump to check out the trailer/condensed version of the entire movie along with the equally terrible poster.  The film also stars Stana Katic, Stephen Moyer, Martin Sheen, and Odette Annable.  The Double opens September 23rd.

Here’s the poster.  I feel bad for Topher Grace’s face.

And here’s the official synopsis for The Double:

In THE DOUBLE, the mysterious murder of a US senator bearing the distinctive trademark of the legendary Soviet assassin “Cassius,” forces Paul Shepherdson (Richard Gere), a retired CIA operative, to team with rookie FBI agent, Ben Geary (Topher Grace), to solve the crime. Having spent his career chasing Cassius, Shepherdson is convinced his nemesis is long dead, but is pushed to take on the case by his former supervisor, Tom Highland (Martin Sheen). Meanwhile, Agent Geary, who wrote his Master’s thesis on Shepherdson’s pursuit of the Soviet killer, is certain that Cassius has resurfaced. As Shepherdson and Geary work their way through crimes both past and present, they discover that Cassius may not be the person they always thought him to be, forcing both to re-examine everything and everyone around them.

wpid wild salome slice Trailer, Poster, and Images for Al Pacino’s WILDE SALOME

Wilde Salome is a curious little project.  Al Pacino’s voiceover in the trailer puts it nicely:

“I’m doing a play.  I’m doing a movie of the play.  And I’m doing a documentary all at the same time.  I have to function two ways: one as a director dealing with a camera, and the other as an actor.  I’ve got too much to do!”

Pacino starred opposite Jessica Chastain in the Oscar Wilde play Salome, and was inspired to explore his Wilde obsession on film.  I’m not entirely sure what to make of Wilde Salome, especially since it’s billed as both a documentary and a drama.  At the very least, Wilde Salome should offer a long look at Pacino at his most manic.  To get a better sense, hit the jump for the trailer, poster, and images.

wpid the skin i live in movie image antonio banderas slice 01 New Trailer and Poster for Pedro Almodovar’s THE SKIN I LIVE IN

A new trailer for Pedro Almodovar’s latest effort The Skin I Live In has been released, and I still have no idea what’s going on. The new trailer is fairly similar to the last one we saw back in June, but adds a few new clips as well as a bit of context/exposition (but just barely). The film centers on a plastic surgeon who imprisons and torments his partner in his basement while plotting his revenge against the man who raped his daughter. Antonio Banderas and Elena Anaya star as the surgeon and partner, respectively. Almodovar is an interesting director, but this movie looks straight up surreal.

Hit the jump to watch the trailer. The film will be screening at the Toronto Film Festival as well as the New York Film Festival this fall. The Skin I Live In opens October 14.

wpid apollo 18 slice1 Third Trailer for APOLLO 18

Yet another trailer for director Gonzalo López-Gallego’s found-footage horror film Apollo 18 has hit the interwebs. As you may know by now, Apollo 18 makes use of “archived footage” to prove not only that the United States returned to the moon after its last official launch in 1972, but also that the unofficial Apollo 18 mission is the reason we never went back.

Timur Bekmambetov (Wanted) produced the film and even though I’m currently suffering from “found-footage fatigue,” I’ll admit that this third trailer makes things look a touch more insidious and interesting as a result. Check out the new trailer after the jump. Click here for the previous trailer and click here for the teaser trailer. Apollo 18 opens on September 2nd.

Here’s the new trailer:

Here’s the official synopsis for Apollo 18:

Officially, Apollo 17, launched December 17th, 1972, was the last manned mission to the moon. But a year later, in December of 1973, two American astronauts were sent on a secret mission to the moon funded by the US Department of Defense. What you are about to see is the actual footage which the astronauts captured on that mission. While NASA denies its authenticity, others say it’s the real reason we’ve never gone back to the moon.

wpid Melancholia movie image slice UK Trailer for MELANCHOLIA

The UK trailer for Lars von Trier’s upcoming sci-fi/disaster drama Melancholia has landed online. Starring Kirsten Dunst, Charlotte Gainsbourg, Alexander Skarsgård and Kiefer Sutherland, the film features Justine (Dunst) and Michael’s (Skarsgård) wedding taking place against the backdrop of impending doom. I can’t claim to be a huge fan of von Trier’s previous work, but everything I’ve seen from Melancholia has intrigued me. It looks beautifully tragic and, for whatever reason, kind of nostalgic to the point that I can’t wait to see it.

Check out the UK trailer after the jump. Click here to watch the first trailer from the film. Melancholia will premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival next month as well as the New York Film Festival and Fantastic Fest. It hits UK theaters on October 30th before getting a VOD release in the United States on October 7th. It will receive a limited theatrical release in the U.S. beginning on November 11th.

Thanks to /Film for tracking down the trailer:

Here’s the official synopsis for Melancholia:

In this beautiful movie about the end of the world, Justine (Kirsten Dunst) and Michael (Alexander Skarsgård) are celebrating their marriage at a sumptuous party in the home of her sister Claire (Charlotte Gainsbourg), and brother-in-law John (Kiefer Sutherland). Despite Claire’s best efforts, the wedding is a fiasco, with family tensions mounting and relationships fraying. Meanwhile, a planet called Melancholia is heading directly towards Earth… MELANCHOLIA is a psychological disaster film from director Lars von Trier.

wpid miss bala movie image slice 0111 Cool Trailer for Mexican Crime Thriller MISS BALA

I hadn’t been paying much attention to Miss Bala and after seeing the trailer that just went online, I’m definitely paying attention now.  The film picked up strong reviews out of Cannes and the fine folks over at The Playlist raved about it.  Gerardo Naranjo’s movie clashes the world of beauty pagents and Mexican drug cartels and while that may sound like a premise for a comedy, it’s actually a harrowing look at modern Mexican society and the violence of the country’s drug wars.  The plot centers on “Laura (Stephanie Sigman), the only witness to a night-club massacre by a group of narcos, who realizes her goal of becoming Miss Baja California – although the gang’s hand in the coronation makes it fall short of what she had dreamed it would be.”  It looks like an exciting flick and I’m hoping I can find time in my schedule to catch it at this year’s Toronto International Film Festival.

Hit the jump to check out the trailer.  No release date has been announced, but Fox International will distribute the film stateside.

wpid hunger games teaser poster slice 01 Teaser Trailer for THE HUNGER GAMES

Lionsgate has released the first trailer for the film adaptation of The Hunger Games.  The movie is set in the future in the ruins of what was once North America and is now known as “Panem”.  The story centers on Katniss Everdeen (Jennifer Lawrence), a young woman who must survive a televised fight to the death between her and teenagers from other the other districts of Panem. You won’t really get any of that from this teaser trailer.  You won’t get much of anything except Katniss running through the woods, dodging fireballs, shooting an arrow, and a really good look at the logo.  This is not a movie that sells itself and there are plenty of folks thinking “Oh, great.  Another Twilight mixed with second-rate Battle Royale.”  They need to be convinced or at least intrigued.  This teaser plays only to the fans and as someone who enjoyed the book, even I was underwhelmed.

Hit the jump to check out the trailer.  Directed by Gary Ross (Seabiscuit), the film also stars Josh Hutcherson, Liam Hemsworth, Woody Harrelson, Elizabeth Banks, and Donald Sutherland star.  The Hunger Games opens on March 23, 2012.

wpid ryan reynolds fireflies in the garden slice Trailer for FIREFLIES IN THE GARDEN Starring Ryan Reynolds, Willem Dafoe and Julia Roberts

A trailer for writer/director Dennis Lee’s drama Fireflies in the Garden has landed online. Starring Ryan Reynolds, Willem Dafoe, Julia Roberts, Emily Watson, Carrie-Anne Moss, Hayden Panettiere and Shannon Lucio, the film is a semi-autobiographical tale from Lee that focuses on the tumultuous relationships within the Taylor family that are confronted after a tragic car accident kills the matriarch (Roberts).

The film was actually completed back in 2008 and is just now making its way to theaters. Given the amount of star power it contains, I wouldn’t think that bodes well for the final product. That said, I think the cut on display here is plenty effective in setting up the tension between father (Dafoe) and son (Reynolds). Check out the trailer after the jump. Fireflies in the Garden will open to select markets on October 14th.

Here’s the trailer [from Yahoo!]:

Here’s the official synopsis for Fireflies in the Garden:

To an outsider, the Taylors are the very picture of the successful American family: Charles (Willem Dafoe) is a tenured professor on track to become university president, son Michael (Ryan Reynolds) is a prolific and well-known romance novelist, daughter Ryne (Shannon Lucio) is poised to enter a prestigious law school, and on the day we are introduced to them, matriarch Lisa (Julia Roberts) will graduate from college-decades after leaving to raise her children. But when a serious accident interrupts the celebration, the far more nuanced reality of this Midwestern family’s history and relationships come to light.
