wpid avengers chris evans robert downey jr image slice Russian Trailer for THE AVENGERS

I couldn’t spot any new footage in the German trailer for The Avengers, but there’s definitely some new stuff in a Russian trailer that just went online.  For example, there’s a brief dialogue exchange between Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.) and Loki (Tom Hiddleston), but it’s dubbed in Russian.  However, I believe it’s the exchange Tommy saw in English at D23 earlier this year.  According to Tommy, Loki says, “He has an army,” and Stark replies, “We have a Hulk.”  There’s also some brief shots of Captain America (Chris Evans) jumping out of a plane and Loki dealing some damage to our fine planet and its citizens.

Hit the jump to check out the Russian trailer.  The film also stars Chris Hemsworth, Jeremy Renner, Scarlett Johansson, Mark Ruffalo, and Samuel L. Jackson.  The Avengers opens in 3D on May 4, 2012.

wpid the babymakers slice First Red Band Trailer for Jay Chandrasekhar’s Comedy THE BABYMAKERS Starring Olivia Munn

The first trailer for director Jay Chandrasekhar’s (Super Troopers, Beerfest) comedy The Babymakers has arrived in the form of an extended NSFW look at the film.  The movie centers on a young married couple who is having trouble conceiving a child. They decide the only way to have kids is to break into a sperm bank in order to retrieve the specimen the husband donated as a young man. Paul Schneider (Lars and the Real Girl) stars as the husband and Olivia Munn plays his wife. While I quite enjoyed Chandrasekhar’s previous Broken Lizard entries (sans The Slammin’ Salmon), this trailer is painfully unfunny. They’re basically making the same dick jokes for over three minutes and I couldn’t even crack a smile.

Hit the jump to watch the trailer. Written by Peter Gaulke and Gerry Swallow (Ice Age: The Meltdown), the film also features quite a few Broken Lizard regulars despite not being an official “Broken Lizard film”, with Paul Soter, Kevin Heffernan, Erik Stolhanske, Steve Lemme, and Chandrasekhar himself all appearing.

Thanks to Film School Rejects for the heads up.

wpid top 10 trailers 2011 slice Top 10 Trailers of 2011

A trailer usually has less than two minutes and thirty seconds to dazzle the viewer and put a movie on his or her radar.  The Internet allows studios to go beyond this theater-mandated time limit and not only run a longer trailer, but also ones that have been approved only for the emotionally mature online community.  But no matter the runtime or how many times a character can swear, the trailer still has to grab your attention.  They can sell us on a premise we didn’t know we wanted, and can find a way to make us even more excited for a movie we were already itching to see.

Hit the jump to check out my picks for Top 10 Trailers of 2011.

[Note: To be eligible for the list, the trailer had to come out this year even if the movie it's promoting doesn't come out until 2012]

10. The Artist

I’m not sure how you make a trailer for a silent film, and it’s not like there are a lot of examples to go by.  The Weinstein Company put together an admirable effort and while they went a little too far through the plot, it’s not like the movie is built on twists and turns.  More than anything, the trailer does a fine job selling a vibe and, like the film, telling a story without speaking.

Sing Sing Sing (With a Swing)” by Benny Goodman & His Orchestra

Almost Martyrs” by Alan Parker

9. Coriolanus

It’s a little funny that the trailer credits the movie as “From the Screenwriter of Gladiator and The Last Samurai” when characters are spouting Shakespearean dialogue, but it also does an excellent job of showing how Shakespeare’s plays don’t have to be contained to their original setting.  The characters are timeless and the trailer convinces the audience to take a shot on Call of Duty: Modern Shakespeare.

“The Beast at Our Door” by Groove Addicts

“It’s Here” by T.T.L

8. The Muppets

There were more than enough parody trailers for The Muppets, but this was the one that finally made me feel like we were getting a real Muppet movie.  Also, you can never go wrong having muppet chickens cluck Cee-Lo’s “Fuck You”.

Forget You” by Camilla and the Chickens

7. The Pirates! Band of Misfits

Any movie that includes the line “And some of you are just a fish I dressed up in a hat,” is worth your attention.”  Throw in jolly lepers and non-decorative sea monsters, and the trailer for The Pirates! Band of Misfits makes it one of my most anticipated movies of the spring.

Blitzkrieg Bop” by Ramones

6. Shame

This trailer manages to convey the adult nature of the material, the stylish visuals, hint at the stellar performances, explain the central conflict, and all to Carey Mulligan‘s heartbreaking rendition of “New York, New York”.  Bravo.

New York, New York ‘Theme’” by Carey Mulligan & Liz Caplan

5. Paranorman

I’m already a sucker for stop-motion animation, and Paranorman seems to be using the approach for a delightfully macabre family flick.  The use of Donovan‘s “Season of the Witch” is great, and I love that the trailer gives you a moment at the end to admire the design of Norman’s toothbrush.

Season of the Witch” by Donovan

4. 21 Jump Street (Red-Band Trailer)

This trailer accomplishes a miracle: it makes me excited for a movie starring Channing Tatum.   It doesn’t hurt that the flick is apparently going all-in as a hard-R comedy rather than try to be a tortured parody of the 1980s TV series.  There are plenty of great jokes in here, Tatum and Jonah Hill looks like they’ll play well off each other, and it looks like Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs directors Phil Lord and Chris Miller have made an easy transition to live-action filmmaking.  Now the trick is to avoid further trailers so I don’t spoil any more of the jokes for myself.

Make Some Noise” by Beastie Boys

Bounce” by MSTRKRFT (feat. N.O.R.E. and ISIS)

3. Prometheus

The teaser trailer for Ridley Scott‘s Prometheus shows what all that “Alien-DNA” talk was about.  Not only does it feature imagery from his 1979 classic sci-fi horror film, but the teaser is brilliantly cut in the same style as the trailer for the original movie.  People who have never seen Alien watch this trailer and get excited for a sci-fi flick coming out next summer.  Alien fans watch this trailer and get chills.

“Judge and Jury” by Audiomachine

2. The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey

I thought this trailer would simply be a bit of Howard Shore‘s Fellowship of the Ring score, a few brief seconds of footage, and then the title.  Instead, we got a real trailer that not only helped to introduce us to new characters, but more importantly, transported us back to Middle-Earth in a heartbeat.  It’s not just seeing familiar faces and settings that make the trailer work.  It’s when we hear the instrumental version of the dwarven hymn as we sweep across a gorgeous vista that we know that Peter Jackson is bringing us back to the world we fell in love with ten years ago.

1. The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo

When I saw this trailer back in May, it instantly made me want to see the movie even though I already knew the story was no good.  Now I’ve seen the movie, I found it lacking, and this trailer still makes me want to see the flick.  It’s got the best tagline (“The Feel Bad Movie of Christmas”) and if you haven’t downloaded Trent Reznor and Karen O.’s cover of “Immigrant Song” by now, then you’ve ruined your holidays.

Immigrant Song” by Karen O., Trent Reznor, & Atticus Ross

wpid taylor kitsch john carter slice Japanese Trailer for JOHN CARTER

I can write up international trailers all day if I need to.  Especially if they are in Japanese to promote Taylor Kitsch movies.  This round, it’s John Carter, with plenty of new footage from the sci-fi epic.  During the holiday movie season, I have seen John Carter footage up on the big screen a few times now, and I think it has the potential to look spectacular at feature length.  I have not yet connected with the story, but I give Andrew Stanton, the writer/director behind WALL·E, the benefit of the doubt.  Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol finally proved once and for all that an animation director—and specifically a Pixar graduate in Brad Bird—can make the leap to big-budget live-action successfully.  Stanton has the material, passion, and skills to follow suit.

Taylor Kitsch, Lynn Collins, Willem Dafoe, Mark Strong, Bryan Cranston, Thomas Haden Church, and James Purefoy star.  John Carter opens in 3D on March 9, 2012.  Watch the new trailer after the break.

Via Cinema Blend:

Official synopsis:

From Academy Award(R)-winning filmmaker Andrew Stanton comes “John Carter”–a sweeping action-adventure set on the mysterious and exotic planet of Barsoom (Mars). “John Carter” is based on a classic novel by Edgar Rice Burroughs, whose highly imaginative adventures served as inspiration for many filmmakers, both past and present. The film tells the story of war-weary, former military captain John Carter (Taylor Kitsch), who is inexplicably transported to Mars where he becomes reluctantly embroiled in a conflict of epic proportions amongst the inhabitants of the planet, including Tars Tarkas (Willem Dafoe) and the captivating Princess Dejah Thoris (Lynn Collins). In a world on the brink of collapse, Carter rediscovers his humanity when he realizes that the survival of Barsoom and its people rests in his hands.

wpid the impossible slice First Teaser Trailer for THE IMPOSSIBLE Starring Naomi Watts and Ewan McGregor

The Impossible was present at the American Film Market in both 2010 and 2011, but we haven’t heard much outside of AFM.  Warner Bros. has released the first teaser trailer—it is stylish and striking and accomplishes everything you want from a teaser trailer.  Impressively, the teaser does all this while dubbed in Spanish.  The Impossible is the English-language debut of Juan Antonio Bayona, director of The Orphanage, which was a massive hit in Bayona’s homeland Spain.  So it makes sense that the first big promotional push is in Spanish.  Luckily for the rest of us, the disaster genre is a universal language.

Led by Naomi Watts and Ewan McGregor, The Impossible tells the story of a family caught in the tsunami that hit Thailand seven years ago today.  Watch the trailer after the jump.

Twitch kindly translated the intertitles:

On December 26, 2004, a devastating tsunami hit the coast of Southeast Asia.
The lives of thousands of families around the world changed forever.
This is the true story of one of these families.

The AFM synopsis:

MARIA (Naomi Watts), HENRY (Ewan McGregor) and their three sons begin their winter vacation in Thailand, looking forward to a few days in tropical paradise. But on the morning of December 26th, as the family relaxes around the pool after their Christmas festivities the night before, a terrifying roar rises up from the center of the earth. As Maria freezes in fear, a huge wall of black water races across the hotel grounds toward her.

Henry grabs the two youngest boys, SIMON and THOMAS, but it’s too late: the wave smashes into him with incredible force and dislodges his grip. Maria is pushed underwater, where she is crushed and battered by debris to the brink of death. She finally surfaces in a raging black sea, which has completely submerged her three-story hotel and the surrounding landscape. Maria gasps for breath while she tries to understand what has just happened, convinced that her family has been obliterated in the blink of an eye. But then, her eldest son, LUCAS (Tom Holland), surfaces a few meters ahead in the wild flood. Face-to-face with something unexpected and incomprehensible, she must fight against all odds for her child’s survival. And her own.

wpid battleship movie image slice 01 Japanese Trailer for BATTLESHIP

I want Battleship to be crazy, ridiculous, and (most importantly) fun.  Basically the Transformers experience with a higher ceiling.  I see that potential in the trailers we have seen so far, but there is no footage that cannot be made better by enthusiastic Japanese voiceover.  A Japanese trailer for Battleship hit the web over the weekend with new footage.  My optimism is not greater, but sustained at a high level.

Paramount is billing the board game adaptation as “an epic action-adventure that unfolds across the seas, in the skies and over land as our planet fights for survival against a superior force.”  Taylor Kitsch, Alexander Skarsgard, Brooklyn Decker, Rihanna, and Liam Neeson star in the Peter Berg-directed feature.  Battleship opens May 18, 2012.  Hit the jump to watch the new trailer, plus a director’s commentary on a previous trailer.

Japanese trailer via Bleeding Cool:

IGN sat down with Berg to talk about the last Battleship trailer.  It serves as a nice jumping-off point for a 17-minute conversation about the characters, the story, Berg’s admiration for the military, as well as the extraterrestrial elements and the scope of the movie.

Official synopsis:

Peter Berg (Hancock) produces and directs Battleship, an epic action-adventure that unfolds across the seas, in the skies and over land as our planet fights for survival against a superior force. Based on Hasbro’s classic naval combat game, Battleship stars Taylor Kitsch as Lt. Alex Hopper, a Naval officer assigned to the USS John Paul Jones; Brooklyn Decker as Sam Shane, a physical therapist and Hopper’s fiancée; Alexander Skarsgard as Hopper’s older brother, Stone, Commanding Officer of the USS Sampson; Rihanna as Petty Officer Raikes, Hopper’s crewmate and a weapons specialist on the USS John Paul Jones; and international superstar Liam Neeson as Hopper and Stone’s superior (and Sam’s father), Admiral Shane.

wpid detachment adrien brody slice Trailers, Clips, and Images for DETACHMENT Starring Adrien Brody, Christina Hendricks, and Lucy Liu

Tony Kaye made a big splash in 1998 with his directorial debut American History X.  He has kept busy in the years since, but maintained a low profile.  That could change with his new film Detachment.  The cast will bring name recognition to the film: veterans Adrien Brody, James Caan, Christina Hendricks, Lucy Liu, Marcia Gay Harden, Bryan Cranston, William Petersen, Blythe Danner, Tim Blake Nelson are joined by fresh faces like Betty Kaye and Sami Gayle.  Tribeca Films acquired the film in September, and has released trailers and clips over the last month that stand out from the vast collection of promotional material we host here at Collider.  The story follows a substitute teacher (Brody) on assignment at a failing public school.  The appeal of Detachment is in the execution, so hit the jump for trailers, clips, posters, and images from the film.

After seeing Trailer Addict posted an international trailer, I searched around to find that Tribeca has been busy in December releasing new material for the film.  It’s heavy stuff, and it is clear that Detachment will be hard to watch.  But I was fully drawn in but what I see here.  I am ready for the challenge.

Not everything posted here is new, but I thought it would be handy to have it all in one place.  There’s a lot to sort through, so we’ll start with the official syopsis:

Director Tony Kaye (American History X) creates a unique and stylized portrait of the American education system seen through the eyes of substitute teacher Henry Barthes (Adrien Brody). Henry wanders in and out of students’ lives, imparting knowledge where he can in the short time he has with them. Then a new assignment places him at a failing public school run by Principal Dearden (Marcia Gay Harden) and alters his insular world. Henry’s stoic front is slowly chipped away by three women who impact his view on life: a student (newcomer Betty Kaye), a fellow teacher (Christina Hendricks), and a teenage runaway (Sami Gayle).

wpid sherlock tv series benedict cumberbatch martin freeman slice 01 New Trailers for Season Two of BBC’s SHERLOCK

A few new trailers for the second season of the BBC series Sherlock have been released. The show is one that I’ve heard nothing but great things about, and after watching these trailers I’m kicking myself over not moving season one up my Netflix queue faster. It’s a modern day revamp of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s beloved detective stories and stars Benedict Cumberbatch (Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy) as Sherlock Holmes and Martin Freeman (The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey) as Doctor John Watson. The show was created by Steven Moffat and Mark Gatiss (Doctor Who) and it really just looks fantastic. Like season one, season two will be comprised of three 90-minute episodes.

Hit the jump to watch the trailers. The first new episode is set to premiere January 1st on BBC One.

wpid michael fassbender prometheus slice1 First Trailer for PROMETHEUS

20th Century Fox has released the first trailer for Prometheus, a sci-fi project from director Ridley Scott with ties to the Alien series.  Here’s the logline: “The film takes a team of scientists and explorers on a thrilling journey that will test their physical and mental limits and strand them on a distant world, where they will discover the answers to our most profound questions and to life’s ultimate mystery.”  This is very much a teaser, as it focuses much more on mood than showcasing whole scenes. We don’t even really get a good look at any of the stars, but that’s inconsequential because the trailer does a damn fine job of sending chills down your spine regardless. If there was any doubt about the film’s connection to Alien, that’ll be put to rest after watching this trailer (the title appearance is fantastic). This marks a return not only to the sci-fi genre for Scott, but to horror, and I couldn’t be happier.

Hit the jump to watch the trailer. Noomi Rapace, Michael Fassbender, Charlize Theron, Idris Elba, and also Guy Pearce star. Prometheus is scheduled for release on June 8, 2012.

The film takes a team of scientists and explorers on a thrilling journey that will test their physical and mental limits and strand them on a distant world, where they will discover the answers to our most profound questions and to life’s ultimate mystery.

wpid Kate Beckinsale Underworld slice New Trailer for UNDERWORLD: AWAKENING

Earlier today, we brought you the Screen Gems trailer for Underworld: Awakening that recapped the last three installments to bring you up to speed on the story of Selene (Kate Beckinsale). Perhaps their original trailer was too confusing. Either way, they’ve just released a new trailer with even more footage, including a better look at the mega-Lycan and India Eisley’s (The Secret Life of the American Teenager) character, Eve, who looks to be a crucial part of the movie’s plot. There is a definite tie-in between the recap trailer released earlier today and the reveal of Eve from this new trailer, but I’ll let you connect the dots.

Underworld: Awakening, directed by Mans Marlind and Bjorn Stein, also stars Michael Ealy (Seven Pounds). The movie is set to open on January 20th, 2012. Hit the jump to check out the new trailer.

Watch the new trailer from Underworld: Awakening, which will open in front of The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, below:

Pretty badass, no? I, for one, am pretty excited about a new installment. Sure, they’re not the most well-written plots out there but for a popcorn movie you can do worse. What role do you think this hybrid child is going to play in Underworld: Awakening? If successful, do you think Beckinsale will return for another go?Let us know your thoughts in the comments below!

Here’s the synopsis:

“The vampire warrioress Selene, escapes imprisonment to find herself in a world where humans have discovered the existence of both Vampire and Lycan clans and are conducting an all-out war to eradicate both immortal species.”
